Eczema

What is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a skin condition causing dry, itchy patches of skin. It's most common in children but can develop in adults. Eczema is a chronic condition that can flare up and become worse.

Causes of Eczema

Eczema can be caused by genetic factors that decrease the skin's ability to retain moisture and protect it from irritation, environmental factors, and bacteria. Eczema can also be caused by infection with Staphylococcus aureus. Immune system issues may also be a cause of eczema.

Signs and Symptoms of Eczema

Eczema can cause unpleasant, uncomfortable symptoms, including dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. Eczema patches can develop on the face, hands, scalp, ears, eyelids, feet, or legs. Skin can also appear swollen, thickened, or rough. Eczema patches can crust over and drain fluid. People with lighter skin often have reddish patches. People with darker skin can often have purple, brown, dark brown, or gray areas of skin.

Self-Care for Eczema

You can take steps at home to get relief from occasional, mild eczema symptoms. Remember to:

  • Take over-the-counter antihistamine medication to control itching.
  • Apply topical anti-itch medications like calamine lotion.
  • Apply moisturizer when you are in the shower.
  • Apply cool, wet bandages and dressings.
  • Take warm oatmeal or baking soda baths.
  • Place a humidifier in your home to reduce allergens.
  • Wear loose, cool, breathable cotton clothing.

When To See Your Dermatologist for Eczema Treatment

Self-care may not be enough to get relief from eczema. You should see your dermatologist if:

  • The itching or pain is affecting your quality of life.
  • The itching or pain is affecting your ability to sleep.
  • Your skin appears infected with new patches, pus, or scabs.

How Your Dermatologist Can Help With Eczema

Your dermatologist offers several effective treatment options for eczema and may recommend:

  • Prescription topical creams to reduce itching
  • Prescription-strength oral medications to relieve itching
  • Antibiotics if your symptoms are caused by a skin infection
  • Oral or injectable anti-inflammatory medications
  • Corticosteroid dressings to reduce skin inflammation
  • Ultraviolet or natural light therapy to eliminate eczema patches
