Cysts/Lipomas

What is a Cyst and What is a Lipoma?

A cyst is a fluid-filled sac. Cysts can appear in many areas of the body, including the skin. A lipoma is a bump composed of fat and fat cells that appear on the skin, usually between the skin and muscle layers.

Signs and Symptoms of Cysts

Most cysts don't cause symptoms, and they appear on the skin, mucous membranes, and some organs. They can grow large and appear as a lump or bump. Larger cysts can be painful.

Signs and Symptoms of Lipomas

Lipomas are typically just under the skin and can appear in the neck, shoulders, back, abdomen, arms, or thighs. They are generally soft, and they move when you press on them. Most lipomas are less than 2 inches in diameter. Lipomas can cause pain if they press on nerves.

When To Consider Having a Cyst or Lipoma Removed

You should consider cyst or lipoma removal if the cyst or lipoma is causing pain if they are located in an obvious area and you are self-conscious about them, or if they are changing in size, shape, color, or other characteristics. In some cases, your dermatologist may recommend sending the tissue for a biopsy after removal. A biopsy can indicate whether the tissue is benign, abnormal, or cancerous.

Removal Options for Cysts and Lipomas

Cysts and lipomas can be removed surgically. Depending on the size and location of the cyst or lipoma, sutures may be necessary. Cysts can also be drained of fluid using a needle and catheter. Lipomas can also be removed with liposuction to remove the fat and fat cells causing the lipoma.
